That's the story I just got from two people, real time. Be happy to get some insight on this. And I'm not asking for you to research or donate, that's a personal thing.
What do you know about GoodWill ? I heard the company was sold under duress by the family to 'investors'.
Check Goodwills tax statements-the stores across the country pay subscriptions to the main office (I believe in Indiana) there are many grants and large donations in addition to ALL the user donations to each and every store where they are sent to a central processing branch for redistribution to each and every store. The truly prime stuff goes to serious auctions, the web site handles the more common donated items and the prices in the stores are higher than even 5 years ago. I have been monitoring the website since 2003 and they make maybe 95% profit on the donated items. This reflected in their tax disclosures. The upper management is highly paid and fiat people seem to love the fiat dollar too much.
There are complaints as to how employees are treated/paid, but it is pretty typical for a business that relys on the kindness of generous citizens.. /s

They use a federal loophole to pay disabled people LESS than minimum wage.
Their execs take lavish retreats and seminars at luxury tropical places on the company dime while pulling 6 figure paychecks.
Want a good charity to donate to? TeenChallange.org is fantastic. Also local churches that run donation centers.
