Really want to check a hotel? Load up a ground penetrating radar into your rolling suitcase.

Note that the second one shown probably won't open from underneath when the closet door is closed. Now, if the closet doors were motorized...

Also doesn't hurt to inspect for bedbugs and two-way mirrors.
