The bread basket of the US/World has a dead man's switch, check google earth and toggle on nuclear waste sites and you will see a triangle of death stretching across the Midwest, if we are attacked (nuclear) or otherwise they can ignite the storage of these waste facilities.
If a Nuke goes off in the city, the half life of decay rate makes soil and non metals relatively safe within a few years.
If the nuclear waste, "Devils Triangle" is sparked, no one will be able to safely consume anything from the US bread belt for thousands to 10's of thousands of years without cellular mutations spreading generation after generation.
