Edit: As this was stickied, I thought I'd add that this same list applies to all future EAS tests as well as it seems each test since Trump has been hyped in some way.
I've seen so many people on these forums talk about how the EAS could be dangerous and that everyone should wrap their phones in tin foil. Also, apparently people online have been talking about keeping their kids home from school and prepping like its going to be a doomsday event.
Here's some reasons why we SHOULDN'T be worried.
-
We know EAS has a significant role in the white hat plan we are all waiting for so ... why block off your ability to hear it? It could possibly be a monumental historical event and you would have to tell your kids that you missed it because you hid and wrapped your phone in tinfoil.
-
At least for Christians, what are we putting our faith in? God or that tin foil will protect us?
-
If there was something bad about the EAS, why wouldn't the white hats have warned us? Yet, all the coms we've been getting are positive. Could it be the 'scare event'? Possibly, but we know that it is coming and expect it.
-
If the white hats are in fact in control, wouldn't they stop something like a massive attack that has the potential to be a massive genocidal attack across the globe?
-
Controlled opposition, the deep state, etc, want us to look like loonies by overacting. They try to dilute our effect by making people think we're nuts. Tinfoil wrapped phones and pulling kids out of school would do that. We need to be seen as the cool and collected that others can rely on when people wake up.
If you can think of others, feel free to add them.
So here's how you deal with these. First off, you have to be running Android - this won't work on an iPhone.
Step 1: Root your phone. This whole fix depends on root access. I've read it can be done via USB debugging but I haven't tried - any Android hackers in the house who can confirm or deny, please feel free.
Step 2: Once rooted, you need either a root file browser or a program like Titanium Backup. I prefer to use Titanium Backup or something like it because the change is reversible should you ever need that.
Step 3: Open your browser/backup tool and look through your system. You're looking for a module called com.android.cellbroadcastreceiver. This file is what controls the EAS system. Weather alerts, amber alerts, alert tests, and yes, presidential alerts --ALL-- depend on this module. It's the brain that makes alerts work on Android.
Step 4: Once you find the file, either freeze it (Titanium Backup) or delete it (whatever other method you want). You just lobotomized the phone's emergency alert subsystem.
Step 5: To check that it worked, go into your settings and browse to Safety & Emergency -> Wireless Emergency Alerts. If the settings app suddenly crashes, the fix worked. It crashes because it can't access the part of the system that it needs to manage settings.
This will completely cripple all alerts. No alerts will be able to reach you while the CellBroadcastReceiver module is disabled/frozen/deleted. If you live in an area prone to weather disasters or otherwise find emergency alerts useful, you may want to weigh pros and cons before doing this, but I can confirm this definitely does work to block presidential alerts - I did it 5 years ago when they tested the EAS system and I got no alert. As a test, I left my phone unrooted this time around with all alerts turned off through settings (the normal, non-root way) and I got today's alert.
Not quite. You still receive the alerts. Deleting the com.android.cellbroadcastreceiver folder only deleted the operating system's method of representing that alert to you, the user. The ability to receive the alerts is baked into your device.
Functionally it's the same thing, but the distinction is there in case it matters to some people for whatever reason
