I DO remember that plot. Refined uranium has an atomic "signature" to it such that fissionable U from one nation has a different signature than U that was refined somewhere else. I think it is either through the refining process or some other technique used, I'm not a chemist. So the plot revolved around forensic traces of the bomb's fallout and debris.
