The "conspiracy" behind that Antarctica location, is that it's an entrance/exit to a DUMB that houses extraterrestrial technology being researched.

The cave/entrance reminds me of Star Trek next generation where the planetary civilizations would be watched by the federation. The outpost was cloaked and high up on a mountain or cliff.
