Charles Williams “Descent Into Hell” is a 1937 novel detailing exactly this phenomenon. It’s well worth reading. He seems to suggest some sort of spiritual disease, contracted through wounded pride, inspiring a bizarre form of autogynephilia. It is literally a descent into, at least, a personal hell.
His other books are also very very good.
Williams was part of the “Inkilings” with CS Lewis, and Tolkien among others. His writing has strong mystical/religious themes, as did, not coincidentally, his life.
