There is a book called Singled Out that was written maybe 15-20 years ago about the British women who became "the spinsters" because in WW1, so many of the men died. When the men went to war, they would send off an entire village together as a unit, and if they saw heavy fighting, it would basically destroy the village. The life expectancy was weeks.
There were interviews, and one woman recalled being in high school, and the teacher said only about one in 10 of them would find husbands, and that was exactly what happened.
