I get that, but the solution was to start a shooting war only a month after inauguration, instead of quietly freezing out the federal government, via the state's rights avenue?

That avenue is incredibly effective today, see sanctuary cities and ICE, or abortion bans pre-Dobbs. If it is that effective today, it'd be leagues better in the 1860s, and even if Lincoln started screaming insurrection, it's much harder to justify military action when you'd be seen as the aggressor occupying "dissident" states.
