My industry is laying off too, but doing it sneakily. Forced Return To Office even for employees that were remote 10+ years started it, and anyone who doesn't come in is abandoning their job so no severance pay or bad press for the company.
And now I know they're finishing up performance reviews, and will most likely fire the lowest performers to reach whatever goal they have that isn't met by RTO attrition.
Of course I'm sure DEI will be a big consideration
