Law & Order SVU in prime time on NBC has had numerous episodes about sex traffickers and creepy cults doing things with minors over the years. So I'm not sure many people don't think it is happening, they may just not believe the extent to which it happens or the exact methods and who is involved.
It's like they've tried to "fictionalize" it by putting it in a TV show. But they put that disclaimer at the beginning if books and movies that they're not related to any real events or people, so people are just supposed to disglregard what they're watching.
