I came here to say the same about NATO. It is an outmoded organization, desperately trying to justify its continued existence. NATO was formed shortly after WWII, purportedly to protect Europe from the Soviet Union. In those days things like tank and infantry battles were still the way wars were fought.
With the advent of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, the nature of war changed, and escalated. Meanwhile, the Soviet Union dissolved under Reagan, and at that point, NATO should have been likewise dissolved. But it is still a money pit into which the US (primarily) throws billions of taxpayer dollars... all for an obsolete way of thinking about war that is stuck in the 1950s.

Well if there wasnt always a "bad guy threatening democracy", how would defence contractors/ MIC make bank.
