Who is in charge of the Borders?
Is it a national thing that federal government maintains, or a state thing in which federal government must let the states decide.
To me I think it should be a federal border in which the states can act in emergency fashion until the federal government can then come and fix that emergency. Didn't Trump have a hard time in California because the states Jumped in. Could it be that we are now seeing that battle play out in reverse. A way to unify what our border actually is. Is it separate borders based off each state, or is it a federal border in which the states can only act on in emergency. Or is it something else.
I'm not exactly sure what the law says. Can anyone help explain things to me.
The constitution grants the federal government the responsibility of securing the border and handling immigration
However, states retain the right to defend themselves in an invasion.
Texas governor Abbot announced that since the federal government failed to fulfill its duties it is going to secure the border anyway, and he's going to make contracts with other states and foreign entities to do so -- which is a direct violation of the federal constitution since states are not allowed to do this.
In short, Governor Abbot has seceded from the United States and declared the federal government null and void.

What are the limits on securing the border. Could a state set up landmines(I don't think they should just to be clear) Obviously this is an extreme. I'm just curious what secure means and how far that's allowed to go.
I think there are many layers at play with this whole thing. Something just feels much deeper then it appears.

States do not ask permission from anyone to defend themselves. They are sovereign. The federal government does not rule over them. There are only a few areas where they are forbidden to certain actions and that is because the constitution limits those particular kinds of actions.
Whether they use landmines or laser sharks is up to them.
