I remember reading letters that were written by civil war soldiers and being blown away by how beautiful and articulate their writing was compared to modern times.

Yes, I remember those also. But my mom was born in 1912, never got beyond 8th grade and she could write like that. Those people took pride in being educated even if they were "just" farmers. Later on she had a secretarial job. she use to correct the grammar of her boss who was "college" educated.
