While I think this is probably just another distraction, I just had a terrible thought..
They already know that they can float a balloon right across the US and the military just "tracks" it. What if they sent a nuke in the payload of a balloon? Is it possible that the first balloons were a test? Could they set one off with a signal from a satellite?
They need to shoot the damn thing down while it's over barren land. Last I checked, fighter aircraft have guns/cannons, so unless that balloon is bulletproof, missiles shouldn't be necessary.
