I know, it's clever, isn't it? This is my over-simplified description:

  1. Inflation is 5% per year.
  2. You put $1,000 into the bank.
  3. The bank buys $1,000 of gold.
  4. The following year you take your money out.
  5. The bank sells its gold for $1,050, including inflation.
  6. The bank gives you your $1,000 and keeps the $50 for itself.
