I felt obliged to mention the passing of a great, but little-known musician. In addition to one of the greatest songs ever recorded, the Goodbye Jumbo album contains a musical prayer entitled “Sweet Soul Dream.” Unlike the Rich Young Ruler of Matthew 19:16-26, the singer/songwriter/virtual-one-man-band Karl Wallinger says that he would give up every treasure on earth in order to obtain heaven:
I give you all my money Abandon that beautiful girl Take my books My choicest looks And burn them all today
I got rare ’61 Beatles I got a film of my dreams But I’d lose them all Burn ’em all Go along without all of it Give up the chances I see
If you’d take me up Raise me up Let me know the heart of it Give me your sweet soul dream Give me your sweet soul dream
Listen to Sweet Soul Dream here.
Is It Like Today
What a songwriter - good stuff right there!!!!
Also from world party: Hawaiian Island World
Written quite some time ago - what did they know? Sacrificing Virgins???
Sinead with haunting backing vocals....
Great music and a fine man. My wife and I saw him perform on a boat while floating around San Diego Bay. My first interaction with him was when I passed him while heading down the ladderwell to grab another drink. I asked him to delay until I could return to the deck - and he did! After his performance, he hung with us and we chatted about life, relationships and music - a little. And how Mike Scott accosted him at the hospital while he was recovering from his aneurysm. What a story!
Good Hawaiian pull from Private Revolution. Relevant lyrics. I wore that needle/laser out listening to that album endlessly.
Wow - cool story.
As far as I know he produced, mixed and engineered his albums too - or had big part in it. Quite talented - lyrically, musically, ‘production-ally’ too -
I still use Ship Of Fools and All Come True as a reference tracks when auditioning new speakers. Great songs - great mixes
Lyric snip: World Party - Ship of Fools
“Avarice and greed are gonna drive you over the endless sea They will leave you drifting in the shallows Or drowning in the oceans of history Traveling the world, you're in search of no good But I'm sure you'll build your Sodom like you knew you would Using all the good people for your galley slaves As you're little boat struggles through the warning waves, but you don't pay”
I listed to Private Revolution on the way into work this morning. Goodbye Jumbo awaits my ride home.
