Having not done it in Alaska, but done it offgrid in the north Midwest my biggest hassle, besides money, was government regulations that force me to hire "skilled" trades and finding any of them to work on a self-contracted build.
It's an utter scam the Democrats enacted here a while ago. Why I say it is obviously a scam is to become a master electrician requires 10,000 hours of experience over a period of at least 5 years, or 12 months as a Journeyman electrician (which has thousands of hours of time spent) OR a 4 year electrician engineering degree, I'm a mechanical engineer, so I can be a master plumber just by passing a book test. Do you know how much residential plumbing we did in engineering school? Zero, which is the same amount the electricial engineers did with residential wiring.
So this was obviously a Democratic pay off to the Unions and the schools. But it's even more stupid than that. If you buy an existing home, you can pull a permit and complete rip everything out and redo all of it yourself, exactly like you would have done with new construction. If they want to argue it's a safety thing why they don't let you do it in new construction it makes zero sense to let you do it in a building you occur. And even more insane you CAN do it in new construction as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

Ooh. I see what you are talking about. That's a good explanation. Paid off to all these demons were their first job for these Dems.
