Anxiety and depression are also two forms of "poor-me" storytelling about the future and past.
Anxiety is a story you tell yourself that creates and justifies fear of what the future holds—and fear of inability to cope with it. Poor you, what if you can't handle it.
Depression is a story you tell yourself that creates and justifies remorse and regret over the past. Poor you, look at what happened to you; you deserved so much better but got shafted [or conversely, You deserved what you got and worse, you are such crap, you deserve to feel depressed now].
Neither of these stories is the real you. It isn't even your friend. The real you is the consciousness that understands this.
The future and past are both nonexistent. Only an image of them inhabits your mind. The current moment is all there actually is, and it's a precious gift from the Creator—that's why it's called the present. :)
