He didn't announce until July in 2016. It's not really out of the ordinary.
Summer Months (June - August): Many VP announcements have occurred during the summer months, particularly around the time of the national party conventions, which typically take place between July and September. This timing allows candidates to generate momentum and excitement for their ticket heading into the general election campaign.
Before and After Conventions: Some candidates announce their VP picks shortly before or during their party's national convention to capitalize on the media attention and unify party members behind the ticket. Others may wait until after the convention to make their announcement, strategically timing it to coincide with other campaign events or developments.
Fall Months (September - October): In some cases, presidential candidates have announced their VP selections in the fall, closer to the general election. This timing allows campaigns to maintain momentum and generate renewed interest in the ticket as voters focus on their choices leading up to Election Day.
