I've always thought both, her and Hunter were so abused as children, they are fighting back. They wanted the diary and the laptop (essentially a diary) to fall into the proper hands.
I understand what you are saying. Hunter and Ashley had to be abused in some way and what is even more sickening is that their parents and those running the administration, who are deathly afraid of what is coming their way, used the whole event as a political mechanism to further their own self interest. Practically the very definition of evil.
