Give me the support of the majority of the people, or give me total control over the Government and I'll take total control over the government every single time. If I run the government in a way that produces a high standard of living, I'm going to have the support of most of the people anyway, and if some agitators against that disappear or get domed during "botched robberies" or a bunch of the people blocking the streets get grabbed up into trucks and sent to jail for a year, not enough people will care to matter.
