Ali was the prophet Muhammad's son-in-law.
Even to this day, Sunnis and Shiites fight over who took over Islam when Muhammad died, Ali or Abu Bakr, Muhammad's right hand man.
Sunnis think Abu Bakr was the rightful successor, while Shias believe it was Ali.
