He is from Jewish family that immigrated from Ukraine during the soviet period when he was a toddler. Looks like he still has connections and is/was cooperating Jewish charities in us, Ukraine and Israel. He was convicted for excessive donations to Trump campaign and was heavily involved in Trump-Ukraine scandal
