No disrespect intended to the brave heroes of Normandy, but the men who signed the Declaration of Independence were the greatest Americans. The signers freely chose to risk their lives and their family's lives signing that document. The Normandy soldiers did not have a free choice and the lives of their families did not hang in the balance if they failed (the first atomic bomb would become available the next summer in 1945).
The soldiers that stormed the beaches of Normandy also had the benefit of the most powerful invasion force to that point in history and that action only happened because our military leadership believed they had sufficient power and surprise to succeed. The men who signed the Declaration of Independence did not have a superior force to their opponents.
