If you get out due to a medical discharge, like I did, and then file for V.A. Disability Compensation and get awarded a disability percentage, you have to pay back whatever stipend the military paid you. In my case, I got a $36K payout and had to pay all of that back monthly, until it was paid back. The V.A. awarded me 60%, so for the better part of 5 yrs, I only received about $456 out of the original $1200/mth a 60% disability "award" paid out at the time (this was back in 2004), until all $36K I got from the Navy was paid back to the Fed Govt. They called it "double dipping."
