The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a global public health emergency due to a new outbreak that began in the Democratic Republic of Congo and spread to nearby countries. Mpox is typically mild but can be fatal in rare cases, causing flu-like symptoms and lesions. This outbreak marks the second time in two years that mpox has reached the highest alert level, known as PHEIC.
The new variant, clade Ib, spreads more easily through close contact, including sexual contact. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for a coordinated international response. Over 17,000 suspected cases and 517 deaths have been reported this year in Africa, a 160% increase from last year.
