From having whooping cough rage through our (unvaxxed) family twice:
Avoid kindergartens and play-centres - even primary schools. But, if the kids do get it,
Small children < 6 yrs, tend to spike very worrying fevers, Try and us kiddy aspirin i,e, low dose ones (I know all the medical literature is now against giving aspirin to children, but it works. If it worries u, use something else to get the fever down, but NOT tylenol (panadol damages the liver). Then babysit them, next to their beds, with cold cloths on their heads throughout the night. They will prolly halucinate a bit, so keep cooling their head and eyes, especially. The optic nerves can be damaged if the fever is unattended. This requires prayer, but it should only be for one night.
Teach them to breathe in deeply, between coughs, once that fever passes and the cough starts barking. So that they can 'get it out'. But also, so that they are able to control the panic of 'not getting any air' and going a bit blue in the face.

The whole bug is not long, just a bit scary.
I just use the whooping cough homeopathic and you can get rid of it in about a week. It's called pertussis nosode.
