I've already seen a similar situation in the past.

This community IDed a criminal in public, I forgot what crime he committed, but they community started beating him up.

The police quickly arrived on the scene, dispersed the mob and surrounded the criminal to protect them from harm.

This also happened recently with the Black Community. I think it was a crippled-black-man who murdered and chopped up a black girl. The community was beating on him, and the police were protecting him.
