'woke' as a term began in the 2000's-2012 era among the 'new-age' spirituality and truther movement. It is an ebonic corruption of 'awake' or awakened.

Originally it mean awake to conditions of the world and political corruption, also real social issues. It came to mean just social issues and was co-opted by the left after the occupy wallstreet and 2012 era was over.
