There were no gulags in 1983, they were under Stalin, who dies in 50s
He did lose his job and was pushed about from pillar to post and led a miserable life until his courage was recognized.

The point is There were no gulags in 1983, people were put in psychiatric hospital for political reasons then and were kept comfortably numb. If he was discharged from the army for violation of a procedure that was a common situation like we have military discharged for refusal of the vaxx
