They made a joke about the acronym in the tv show M *A *S *H when Hawkeye is trying to call America to inquire about his dad's surgery. The operator on the line tells Hawkeye he's trying to get through "Mars." Hawkeye is confused by this, and Winchester explains the full name as "Military Auxiliary Radio Systems/Stations."
