Piper Chieftain. Most likely either a check flight post maintenance, or a pilot recertification/training
Naw, the flight path is CLEARLY doing a precise scan over an area. Who knows what electronics they are hanging, but someone just doing a checkride wouldn't worry about making a precise grid. Just some pattern flying touch n gos, etc. They wouldn't give a crap about following a precise back and forth.
100% scanning for something. Could be aerial photos (like bing maps, google satellite view, etc) maybe geological ground penetrating radar or whatever the miners oil drillers use, something like that.
All good points. However, what I said was also plausible. I have been on check flights that flew similar patterns to calibrate instruments after either repairs or planned maintenance intervals. Any of those you mention could be correct as well.
