I always thought that was a NY thing- "Waiting on line", "Staying on line", etc. instead of "in line". I know of one song from the 80s, from a NY band that uses that line, and Connie said it in Godfather II (not NY, though), so...
Definitely a regional phrase. Down south we stand in line. Up north they stand on line.
Raised on the northeast coast and lived there 21 years, never heard of "stay on line" in my life to mean the same as "stay in line"
From where I live, on the east coast, anything above me on the map is north ;-). But yes, I meant east coast north of the Mason Dixon line...
