because that's pretty close to the role Gandalf plays. they don't worship him as a God, they've just seen the power he wields, and they know he's there to do good.
Kneeling to a king is historical fact, but our forefathers fought a war to end that. Biblically speaking, kneeling to prophets wasn't a thing, there are times angels admonished people not to kneel to them. (edit: the angels)

I never got Tolkien's analogies like I did Lewis'. If the two guys were standing with arms raised in victory, I'd be all about it.
