Just going to put it out there that that holding back as a pursuer might be the right call if the enemy is fleeing through corridors and territory that you have previously held, and when holding took the opportunity to seed it with traps and attrition-type perils.
That doesn't mean that giving the impression that you are hot on their heels is a bad thing, the stressors of denying rest and refuge will ruin an already depleted foe.
