True, Armageddon is described in the last book of the Bible as “the war of the great day of God the Almighty.” (Revelation 16:14, 16) But it will be far different from a nuclear holocaust! Such a holocaust would likely mean the annihilation of all life on earth. On the contrary, God’s Word gives the happy assurance that only wicked opposers of God will be destroyed—by forces under God’s control. (Psalm 37:9, 10; 145:20) A great crowd of humans, out of all nations, will survive the climax of divine judgment at Armageddon. Christ Jesus will then shepherd and guide these to life everlasting in a paradise earth. Do you not want to be one of them? Happily, Revelation shows that you may be!—Revelation 7:9, 14, 17.

What could possibly happen in a flash that isn't say a meteor, that would shake the planet and make everyone weep from afar? All trade ceases etc, our global world order decimated in an instant? I'd suggest the collapse (somehow)of the WorldWideWeb could be the answer. In the space of 20 years, it has reached out its tendrils into everybody's home, workplace and pockets, society would collapse overnight without the WWW, and we gleefully paid for the privilege.
I guess what I'm theorizing is Babylon in this context could be a metaphor for the WWW. Re reading Revelation 18 with this in mind really got me thinking..🤔
The Doom of Babylon
Then a mighty angel picked up a stone the size of a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying:
“With such violence
the great city of Babylon will be cast down,
never to be seen again.
And the sound of harpists and musicians,
of flute players and trumpeters,
will never ring out in you again.
Nor will any craftsmen of any trade
be found in you again,
nor the sound of a millstone
be heard in you again.
The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again,
and the voices of a bride and bridegroom
will never call out in you again.
For your merchants were the great ones of the earth,
because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery.
