I had two of them, a ‘94 and a ‘98. The ‘94 needed a rear main seal early on and that was the end of engine trouble for over 400,000 miles combined on the 4.0 liter I-6s.
I've had a total of 6 Jeeps with the 4.0L. Current ones are at 322k, 152k, and the last has cylinder #1 out the oil pan and will be getting replaced with an 80k mile drivetrain that is from an XJ that got totalled.
Mine were 2 XJs with the 5 speed manual and 2WD. I see no real need for 4WD on the road although it is uncanny in the wet if driven correctly. I had a friend who had a lucrative side hustle replacing transfer cases in the yuppie’s SUVs after they stretched the chain and cracked the case.
