Gloves would make this sort of thing more difficult and increase the chances he messed up.
Gloves wouldn't be necessary either. A professional hitman would either have the gun permanently taken care of in some fashion, or would continue to keep it with them because they wouldn't expect to be caught. They're probably not dumping it in some trash can with all their prints on gun.
Gloves would also get in the way of a quick wardrobe change if needed to get away. The gloves would collect an awful lot of DNA, possibly prints if forensic analysis could get them.

He did appear confident. It would be interesting to know if the cases with words in them were only nonexpended rounds. That would clearly show intent.
