I would like to understand what they would be "sniffing" for. A nuclear weapon does not emit fission products (until it is detonated, of course). The natural radioactivity from enriched uranium or plutonium is mainly alpha particles, which have a short free path before being stopped cold and turning into helium. Maybe they are sniffing for helium.
