iPhones use Globalstar's low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites for their Emergency SOS via satellite feature: How it works: When an iPhone user makes an Emergency SOS request, the message is sent to one of Globalstar's 24 satellites, which are traveling at speeds of about 16,000 mph. What happens next: The satellite sends the information to a ground station, which then routes the call to a local dispatch center or relay center. Which iPhones support it: All iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models support Emergency SOS via satellite. Availability: Emergency SOS via satellite isn't available in all countries or regions. Apple invested $450 million in Globalstar to improve their satellite network and ground stations. Apple has also committed an additional $1.5 billion to Globalstar to expand iPhone services.
