NYC has something like 8.3 million people.
This is more than 33 US states. Another million people commute in or visit every day.
It changes how you view something like this.
If you live in Arizona and something tragic happens somewhere in the state do you feel unsafe? (Arizona has a population 7.5 million)
It's been years and years since I felt physically unsafe in NYC. I routinely walk around my neighborhood after midnight.
NYC doesn't even make this list of 100 most dangerous cities in the US

Anchorage, AK Wichita, KS Winston-Salem, NC Lubbock, TX Salt Lake City, UT Billings, MT
Even Muskogee Oklahoma USA that Merle Haggard sang about is more dangerous than NYC.
In fact it's probably been decades since NYC made that list.
