Not a silly question. I personally prefer the NIV ("New International Version") for simplicity and clarity and ease of understanding and have read it twice, cover to cover. I have a Study version that has all kinds of notes, but the one I read all the time only has a few footnotes - much less intimidating and much lighter and easier to handle. But the other is nice for reference. I grew up with the King James Version, which is more poetic but not as accessible. I also have the 1699 version but haven't read that much at all. I would imagine the earlier versions are less "tampered with" but whatever brings you closest to God is what you should read. An unscholarly answer, but there you go.
