Gen X'er here. My mom and her siblings grew up on a farm. She said it was a twice a year protocol--in fall and spring. They had to take cocoa quinine and castor oil. Mom said they did it over a school break because it would clean them out completely. Also, interestingly, they were allowed to go barefoot outside except in the morning, because of the dew on the grass. Their mother (1/2 Cherokee Indian) told them they'd get worms if they walked on the wet grass... and to only walk outside barefoot when it was dry.
