Well, to be honest, NATO was formed to protect European nations from the Soviet Union after WWII. So under its original mission, that would have been stupid.
After the Communist Block and USSR disintegrated, NATO should have celebrated that it worked itself out of a job!

No, when the Soviet Union fell, NATO should have been abandoned, just like its sister organization, SEATO in the Pacific.
