sounds like a company I use to work for. People were physically at work, but their phone messages were full and emails were never checked just deleted. Of course the 'new' management kept these people and layed off veteran employees.
Plenty of times I've visited someone at their desk and looking over their shoulder saw hundreds if not thousands of unread emails in their Outlook. I've never let more than a dozen pile up in a day, at least glancing at them before deleting if they were just irrelevant ones that I was CC'd on. I read everything.
