I don't for a moment think that kind of revelation would put people in the hospital. It might cause a paradigm shift and some deep soul searching for many (and I believe some of what you say is true!).
No, I think what would put people in the hospital is more related to reality itself... our perception of it, whether we live in a hologram (or matrix), or some core, foundational shared belief is suddenly revealed to be nonexistent. Or that several different realities (or dimensions) coexisted with our own, and we cannot see them, but they see us and all we do in this lower 3-dimensional universe.
...or perhaps the knowledge that no one really dies, that we continue to exist in some higher dimensional form and that we are surrounded by the presence of all humans who have gone before us, we just can't see them.
The possibilities are endless, but to actually put people in the hospital, I think it would require such a huge paradigm shift in our knowledge and beliefs that most people would suffer cognitive dissonance of major, permanent proportions.
This is my exact belief also,
They went to the moon, found something, had Kubrick cover it up.
