Not many do. The Tendency among the Western Mainstream is to treat it like a backwards version of Western Europe. Or among the Western Right as some based bastion of traditional European/Western values.
When in reality it may as well be an Alien culture in comparison to Western European cultures and associated philosophical and political heritages. Russia remained comparatively isolated from the Protest Reformation. And the Enlightenment and the many troubles and strife it inflicted on Western Europe never took root to the same extent. In fact Russia was still an absolutist Monarchy into the 1900s. On paper at least.
Which served as the primary points for philosophical and political deviations. The size of the country, and the wide array of various cultures and groups within. Combined with the fact some of the groups have a relationship akin to the Irish and English. Led to a more Authoritarian style at least by Western standards. Being the standard for Governance in Russia. Even for the more ‘liberal’ periods in its history. Otherwise the country we know as Russia would have ceased to exist. Honestly it would have been fascinating to see what could have been without Lenin and Stalin.
