He didn't separate himself from God. He asked the question to test the rich man. If he called Jesus good, then he must have recognized Jesus is God.

Yes, but jesus said "why do you call me good? Only God is good." That is as clear as I can put it. I understand nobody can rationalize that statement that believes jesus and God are the same
