Putin has countrymen who respect him and love mother Russia. He also has impressive weaponry. Zelinszy is not respected. He was selected, not elected. He has sold a great deal of the weaponry given to him. He has people driving around in vans, kidnapping men to put on the front line. President Trump's peace talks with Putin are probably, at the very least, unconventional.
